How is a Dianping star rating calculated?

Dianping has not published its full formula, but the rules it has published point one way: the more genuine the reviews, the more the stars mean.

Since February 2021 a store needs at least 10 reviews before a star rating is calculated, starting with 7 lifestyle categories such as hair, nails and massage, and the calculation weighs whether reviews are genuine and helpful to other users. In Dianping's survey, 81% of respondents said stars only mean something past 10 reviewsIT Home, 2021-02-01.

In August 2025 the star rules were upgraded again, and merchants with genuine reviews are more likely to move up: after the upgrade, 320,000 merchants had their star ratings raisedXinhua, 2026-03-23, citing Dianping's 2025 Review Transparency Report. For a store that does the work, that is good news.

These are rules and figures Dianping has published for the whole platform, mostly from the China market. Dianping has not said whether they apply to Malaysian stores in the same way.

How should you handle a bad Dianping review?

A merchant cannot delete a bad reviewChina News Service, 2026-04-28, but a thoughtful reply shows the next customers how you care for guests.

Dianping reviews: frequently asked questions

Can a bad review on Dianping be deleted?

Not by the merchant, and Dianping prohibits removing reviews by unauthorised technical meansChina News Service, 2026-04-28. The better move is to check whether the review is fair: if it is, fix the problem, then reply publicly and say what you changed, so the next customers see that you care.

Can I give a free dish or discount for a five-star review?

We advise against it. Dianping encourages genuine reviews: five stars traded for a free dish or a discount are treated as induced reviews, do not count toward the rating and can affect the overall scoreHongcan, 2026-01-04. Warm, normal service interaction is fine. Serve well and remind real customers to share how it was; good reviews built that way last.
